Aster sp.:
Blue/white/purple perennials. 40 - 100 cm. (16 -40") tall, blooms from mid-August to
October. Will grow on poor, gravelly soils in full sun to partial shade. Seed
in early June or late fall. Attracts: Butterflies.
Smooth Aster (Aster laevis):
Blue to purple/yellow center blossomed perennial, 30 - 120 cm. (12 - 48")
tall, blooms August to September. Will grow in gravelly soils in full sun to partial
shade. Forms clumps up to 40 cm. (16") in diameter. Seed in early June or
late fall. Companions: Velvety Goldenrod. Attracts: butterflies.
Lindsay's Aster (Aster ciliolatus):
Deep blue/yellow center blossomed perennial, 30 - 120 cm. (12 - 48") tall,
blooms August to September. Grows in any soil in full sun to partial shade.
Found in open spaces among trees. Seed in early June or late fall. Companions
Velvety Goldenrod. Attracts: Butterflies.
Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa):
Pink/lilac perennial, 30-70 cm. (12-28") tall, blooms July and August.
Will grow in well-drained average soil in full sun to light shade. Seed in
early June (stratify) or late fall. Should bloom second year. Companions:
Black-eyed Susan, Asters, Purple Prairie Clover, Gaillardia. Attracts: Hummingbirds,
moths, and butterflies.
Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta):
Yellow with dark center, biennial, 30-45 cm. (4-12") tall, blooms July to
August. Will grow on any type of soil in full sun to light shade. Seed in early June
(stratify) or late fall. Companions: Asters, Bergamot.
Dotted Blazingstar (Liatris punctata):
Rose/purple blossomed compact perennial, 20-60 cm. (8-24") tall, blooms July
to September. Will grow on moderately rich to moist soils in full sun. Seed in early
June (stratify) or late fall. Attractive ornamental. Good for cutting flowers.
Attracts: Hummingbirds.
Blue Flax (Linum lewisii):
A dainty, blue flowered perennial, 20-70 cm. (8-28") tall, blooms in morning
only through July and August. Will grow on any type of well-drained soil in full
sun. Excellent for xeriscaping. Seed early June or late fall. Companions:
Gaillardia, Coneflower. Attracts: Butterflies.
Canada Milkvetch (Astragulus canadensis):
Creamy, greenish white blossomed perennial, 30-100 cm.(12-40") tall, blooms
June - July. Will grow in sandy soils in full sun to partial shade. Forms colonies.
Seed in early June (stratify) or late fall. Ideal for rock gardens: foliage,
blossoms, seed pods attractive over long period.
