Prairie Coneflower (Ratibida columnifera):
Yellow with black centre perennial, 30-60 cm. (12-24") tall, blooms July to September.   Seed in early June (stratify) or late fall.  Will grow in most soils in full sun.  Good for xeriscaping and is drought tolerant once established. Companions: Gaillardia, Blue Flax, Purple Prairie Clover.

Purple Smoke (Three-flowered Avens)  (Geum triflorum):
Rose colored perennial, 20-40cm. (8-16") tall, blooms April to June.   Seed in early June (stratify) or late fall.  Able to withstand poor, dry soils and needs full sun to light shade. Companions: Crocus.  Ideal for rock gardens - foliage, bloom and seed head attractive over a long period.

Purple Prairie Clover (Petalostemon purpureum):
Red/purple perennial, up to 40 cm. (16") tall, blooms in July to September.   Seed in early June (stratify and scarify - rub between sandpaper to break seed coat just before planting) or late fall.  Seedlings susceptible to damping off so water sparingly.  Attracts: bees and beetles.  Excellent for xeriscaping.

Rhombic-leaved Sunflower (Helianthus laetiflorus):
Yellow/brownish centre blossomed perennial, up to 60 inches tall. Grows in dry areas, light soils in full sun.  Seed in early June (stratify) or late fall.   Can be aggressive so contain area or seed with plenty of competition.   Attracts: Birds.

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium):
White blossomed, ferny - looking perennial, 50-70 cm. (20-28") tall, blooms June - September.  Grows best in light soil with dry to moist conditions in full sun. Forms colonies up to 60 cm. (24"). Best to contain. Seed in early June (stratify) or late fall. Drought tolerant. Excellent for erosion control. Good for dried floral arrangements. Companions: Asters.

Yellow Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis):
Yellow biennial, 50-150 cm. (20-60") tall, blooms July to August. Blooms from evening to sunrise. Will grow in nearly any dry, sunny location, likes sandy soils. Can become weedy if seeds are allowed to disperse. Seed in early June (stratify) or late fall. Sweet lemony perfume attracts nocturnal butterflies.
